Analysis: Journalists' articles often didn't communicate uncertainty of evidence on unproven COVID drugs

Tue, 2024-09-03 19:52 — mike kraft
Analysis: Journalists often didn't communicate uncertainty of evidence on unproven COVID drugs Scientific evidence of the efficacy of the unproven COVID-19 therapies hydroxychloroquine, remdesivir, and convalescent plasma was often presented in US news stories in the first months of the pandemic, but scientific uncertainty was commonly omitted and only rarely appeared in headlines or ledes, with possible implications for public health, researchers reported yesterday in JMIR Infodemiology. Analysis: Antiviral TPOXX, used for mpox no better than placebo, NIH

Fri, 2024-08-16 12:17 — mike kraft
Antiviral used for mpox no better than placebo, NIH says Just as mpox is declared a global health emergency, the antiviral tecovirimat is found to be no better than placebo against it. Jason Mast STAT

The National Institutes of Health said Thursday that an antiviral often used to treat mpox did not resolve patients’ symptoms faster than placebo in a randomized trial.

The results are notable because the drug, tecovirimat, has rarely been studied clinically for mpox, despite its wide use during the 2022 and 2023 outbreaks in the U.S. and Europe.
